European TravelsThese current works are from recent travels to France and Italy. Travelogue, granted, but these places were new to me. Perhaps most thrilling was finding exact spots where my painting heroes must have stood: Turner, Sargent, Van Gogh, Whistler and Hopper. Then try to find spots of my own.
Everything I learned painting Iowa traveled quite nicely. Maybe that’s the advantage of living in a single star solar system. The wines there were none too shabby either… In any case, I hope you enjoy these places as much as I did! About the ArtistJohn Preston came from Maryland to study in Fairfield, Iowa, where he earned his BFA in 1984 at Maharishi International University and continues to reside and paint full-time. Preston's paintings primarily depict the dramatic climate of the Midwest, as well as its expansive skies and rolling fields. They often represent particular locations against a backdrop of weather events from observation, memory and where necessary, imagination. Simple, visual attraction is the central motivation, and he enjoys finding an idea in an image, rather than finding an image for an idea. Preston has exhibited nationally and is in many private and public collections, including Shuttleworth and Ingersoll Law Office, Simmons Perrine Law Office, Iowa State University, John Deere, Kirkwood College, Mercy Hospital, the internationally recognized Art in the Embassy Program, and the Chicago Federal Reserve. |
