While exploring the Mississippi River, Count Giacomo Beltrami became obsessed with finding the headwaters. He was abandoned by a small group of Chippewa that were guiding him before the task was complete. They were attacked by another group of Chippewa who were apparently shocked by the strange appearance of the amusing Italian explorer. He continued alone for several days facing the barriers of the thick Northwoods with its many lakes.
