Ancient Healing Properties
"I’ve been experimenting a lot. I have also been thinking a lot about healing.
My mother has been in and out of the hospital since the beginning of this year. The time spent traveling back and forth had me thinking about healing and how it can be heartbreaking through the process. My artwork is spontaneous, adapting to moments of joy, tension, and the mundane. Collaborating with my materials allows me to be present to the experience. And these materials are like my therapy. My painting process is very three-dimensional, and incorporating printmaking and ceramics has let me see painting in a whole new way. I always work out a lot of problems in my art making. I create places of happiness. Landscapes where you can rest your soul. Not any old places, but locations unknown; full of delicious color, long expanses, odd quirky shapes, and patterns. Not linear moments, but an abstracted experience you can’t quite define. You’ll be able to take a deep breath. Let your mind wander. Get lost in the depth. Because you need it and I want you to have it." -Mary About the ArtistMary Zeran was raised in a family of women artists whose textiles, embroidery, and woodcarvings, existed as their visual language; enigmatic shapes and forms were their words. Each time she picks up a brush or scissors she immerses herself in the language of her family, which brings her ever closer to their traditions, histories, and stories.
Zeran’s collage work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad including Cedar Rapids Museum of Art; SOIL Gallery in Seattle; and Chiang Mai University in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In addition, her work is in several public and private collections as well as many corporate collections; including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Cedar Rapids Museum of Art; U.S. Cellular Center, Cedar Rapids; Grafix Corporation, Cleveland; and United Fire Group, Los Angeles. Ms. Zeran is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
