Brittle Branches
As a landscape painter, I often need a change from a dominate green color palette, to something warmer. Trees, without foliage offer that opportunity. Winter sunlight penetrating through bare branches lends itself to endless color choices. When branches are dormant, gravity directs the branches in a graceful bend. I find that broken, brittle branches have more character and add more interest to a painting. Beauty and imperfection go together!
My process is one of adding many more branches than necessary and gradually removing those less important. I find that turning the painting around on all sides as I work, helps me spot places that need correction.
Yes, I do find myself tangled in branches until I paint the final stroke; a sense of accomplishment working my way out.

About the Artist
Nancy Lindsay was born in 1948 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Art has always been her primary interest, even as a young child. She studied art at Colorado State University and Art Students League NY. She worked for many years in the commercial printing industry as a graphic designer and gallery owner. Moving to Iowa in 1998, she discovered the beauty of the Iowa’s river valleys, rolling hills and woodlands; a step away from the Nebraska Plains.
Travel has recently led her to European destinations and in 2003 she created a series titled From Paris to Istanbul. This was exhibited in two museum settings.
Her paintings can be found in many residential homes and corporate buildings across the country. She has paintings in the permanent collections of Nebraska Wesleyan University, Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Iowa State University President’s Home, and the Dubuque Museum of Art.
